We have being delivering INSET for several years, both as single days and on-going courses. Areas covered include:

  • An introduction to NLP and Magical Spelling

  • Advanced Communication Skills

  • Developing Self Esteem

  • Managing Change

In addition we offer an 8-session INSET course, NLP Foundation Skills for Enhancing Personal Effectiveness. The course covers much of the NLP Diploma material, with a specifically educational focus, and is designed for flexible delivery; it can be run as a series if days, half days or twilight sessions.

The title of the course was chosen deliberately to highlight our commitment to resourcing all those involved in the education process.

What about the teacher?

'One day a friend saw Michelangelo working on a piece of marble he had found in a rubbish dump near Rome. When he asked Michelangelo what he was doing the great sculptor replied, "There's an angel inside and I'm going to bring him out."

As educators, you remain the greatest single resource your students have. The very best teaching involves drawing out the 'angel' inside each child. How much emphasis has there been on enabling educators to develop and draw out their own 'angel'?

The nature of the role is changing; there is a growing demand for a revised and enhanced set of skills arising from the national agenda for the development of schools. Issues such as increased personalisation of learning and greater inclusion is shifting the emphasis away from subject and phase expertise towards a more generalised set of skills, focusing on areas such as:

  • Emotional Intelligence

  • Interpersonal skills

  • Managing Behaviour

  • Inclusion

  • Personalised learning

  • Accelerated Learning

Educators need the opportunity to develop these skills not only to enhance their teaching, but also to resource themselves. They are continually being asked to face new challenges - there should be an equal investment in enabling them to respond positively to these challenges.

On the NLP Foundation Skills for Enhancing Personal Effectiveness course you will learn strategies to:

  • Increase confidence

  • Decrease anxiety and stress

  • Communicate really effectively with students, colleagues, parents and yourself

  • Plan and set goals that are realistic and achievable

  • 'Make it motivating'

  • Develop greater personal control and responsibility

  • Enhance thinking skills and problem-solving

We are currently using this course as the training input of a research project looking at the efficacy of NLP approaches for education. The project is being evaluated through the University of Portsmouth School of Education and the report is due for publication in 2005.

We also have a contract with the West Sussex CIS to offer the course as part of their demand led training schedule. This is particularly exciting, since Early Years practitioners are working with children taking their first steps away from home and towards school. This can be a challenging, as well as exciting time for both them and their parents, and is likely to call on the more generalised skills mentioned above.
